what do you think?

I saw you .... People having mixed opinions about 5.07 and 7.05. So which should I take?! D:<

  1. 5.07 is my favorite class out of everything I've taken here. I had friends in 7.05 and from what I gathered, I definitely wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much. That being said, a decent number of people in 5.07 with me hated the class. I'd ask yourself what you want from it and choose the class that fits the best with your interests/goals. Either that, or just choose the one that fits into your schedule the best if you are just taking it because you have to =D

  2. Are you actually interested in biochemistry? Then take 5.07. It's harder, but you'll learn more. Are you not interested but have to take it, and just want it to be over with? Then take 7.05--it's a lot easier than 5.07.

  3. so it all depends on what you are interested in. Do you like orgo? do you like to know how things actually work in metabolism? like the mechanisms and all? then take 5.07. it prepares you better both as a chem major (or someone interested in biochem) and also is overall more useful. 7.05 is more bio oriented and kind of similar to 7.013 and 7.03 in structure. You usually look at a much bigger picture. oh and btw, prof stubbe and esigman are totally weird and cool!

  4. I hated 5.07 and almost failed, but in retrospect I definitely learned a lot. If you take it, just be prepared for Prof. Stubbe to mention a doberman pinscher every class.

  5. I'm guessing that you are a course 20 rising junior or sophomore? If you are, I'm assuming that you like bio more than chem...

    Take 7.05. Done.

  6. Take 5.07 if you want to learn something.

7.05's for people who just want to punch another hole in their ticket to med school.

  7. I'd disagree with #6. There are some of the annoying premed types in the class, but then again every premed class will have some of those. Ultimately 7.05 is for people who like Bio more than they like Chem. Last semester, there were a LOT of course 20s in it, for example.

Also, it's my favorite class I've ever taken, especially the first half. Although from the course schedule it looks like Prof. Yaffe is not teaching it next year, which is a bummer, because he's an all-around awesome professor. He made the class 10x cooler (and it was really cool to begin with) Case in point: it was a 9:30 class and I never missed any of his lectures.

I thought the exams were very well written too, they required you to actually think, no memorization or crap like that (exams are open notes)

Prof. Brown's exams are a bit more cookie-cutter, though also open-notes (he teaches the metabolism part)

I did hear good things about 5.07, but they came from people who were more into chem than bio. I'm course 7 and I think I definitely made the right choice. But, as you can see, opinions do differ.

  9. I took 5.07 and got into WashU med school (top 5). My friend took 7.05 and is going to Albert Einstien med school (number 40). You decide what you want.

  10. lol @9, I'm pretty sure there were more factors to which med schools you and your friend got in to besides what version of biochemistry you took...

  11. @9 I'm going to washu med as well. Hit me up!

  12. @9 anecdotal evidence, hooo!
Anyway, this question is very difficult to get an accurate answer for, since no one has taken both classes. FWIW, I enjoyed 7.05.

  13. based on the grading schemes for the two classes most people are going to say that 7.05 is easier. so if you take 5.07 be prepared to work hard (not that it will be not as enjoyable). its a fact. deal with it.

  14. 7.05 isn't a walk in the park either though. You actually have to go to lectures (definitely for the first half of the course) and prepare a lot for exams (even writing up your note pages for the exams takes a week for the first two, more like two weeks for the second two exams if you work on it a few hours every day -- everything has to be hand-written. I think altogether I had something around 60 pages of notes and there were people with more)

The class isn't graded on a curve, which I liked but some others didn't.

  15. @ Boring!! Let's share thread is so much more interesting.

  16. I had sex with prof yaffe! Best sex I had in a looong time.

  17. Prof Brown who teaches the metabolism part of 7.05 is a nobel laureate. He discovered most of the pathways that he teaches and has taught 7.05 for over 50 years. He does his lectures by heart. That means he knows every molecule, enzyme, product etc etc of every taught reaction. Mega-badass. He is also very sweet :)
