I saw you...a lady wearing a black cap, a black skirt and a backpack walking around campus. When you walked past me, you often mumbled something. Recently I tried to figure out what it was and I heard you said "b*tch". What's going on? I don't know you. I was just going about my day.

  1. Someone called me "b*tch" a few days ago for no reason at all. Maybe it was the same person or maybe not, but it seems to be a trend, unfortunately.

  2. LOL

  3. Was it because you didn't say thank you when someone held the door open? You tried to get on the T before everyone got off? You were too busy staring at your phone while you were walking down the hall to notice everyone was getting out of your way?

There are lots of bitchy things we do in our day to day lives, and sometimes, people are having a shitty day so they decide to call you out.

Or she was just being a weirdo.

  4. I know this woman, she's often walking around MIT scouting out for free food events. I've seen her legit walk into info panels and then just turn face and leave with no food there.

She's either a homeless person (pretty pro at that if she's been using MIT for free food for years and keep up her appearance) or the most dedicated freegan professor ever.

And yeah her disposition usually ain't to great.

  5. Also after looking at math equations for the better part of 5 hours my English ain't too great either. @_______@

  6. Yeah, she's definitely homeless. She always wears the same clothing, and she knows the regularly planned free food events (for example the physics colloquium).

  7. I once went to a bathroom and saw her sleeping in there. She said something like what the heck !@$#... I got really confused then apologized for interrupting.

  8. Ah, so that's where she sleeps

Also isn't she technically trespassing or something? I've definitely seen MIT police throw homeless people out of MIT buildings before but I guess they don't notice her since she keeps up her appearance.

It's a good thing that she has some way of regularly getting sustenance and shelter but if it becomes a problem for the students then it really can't go on.

  10. She once yelled at my friend for glancing at her shoes.

  11. Once she showed up to one of my seminars and claimed to be a mother of a student interested in MIT for grad school??? Kind of confusing. I've seen her in athena clusters and around late at night.

  12. this is gold

  13. If that's the case, it is sad that she's homeless. But MIT's not a homeless shelter, and if she's seen around and especially if she's harassing or bothering people, someone should contact Campus Police.

  14. sounds like she should either be in a mental hospital or a homeless shelter

MIT is arguably the first, but definitely not the second

  15. Wait, is this the lady that's always in the building 16 athena cluster super late at night? She's way too old to be a grad student, and there is definitely something wrong with her. I'm curious how she keeps managing to get the combo there...

  16. MIT students will sometimes just give out the combo instead of telling them how to get the new combo on a quickstation ('tellme combo' on the terminal, in case y'all didn't know).

Remember, it only takes one student per year to give the combo to someone.

  17. Was she using an Athena computer or just sleeping/resting in there?

And is there a reason why we use the combo for the clusters instead of ID card access?

  18. Is there a reason for any ass backwards policy here?

  19. I don't think she presents any harm to the community. She stays out of the way and very rarely interacts with anyone.

I think some people here have a fundamental misunderstanding of how homeless shelters work. Plus, Boston's largest homeless shelter closed in October.

  20. I already have too many things on my conscience to add evicting a mostly-harmless homeless lady on top of it. It's whatever to me.

  21. for people who consistently loose their ID, a code is much better than card access

  22. I think the code policy for clusters is fine, but consistently losing your ID isn't acceptable.

You'll likely work for or visit a company at some point in your career that gives you security cards, tokens, etc. and it'll be a lot less cute when you lose those things every couple of months...

  23. On campus security would be a lot simpler if one could assume that lost IDs are a relatively rare event (and are hastily reported lost when it happens)

  24. I've given up on keeping track of my IDs. I'm on number 9 at the mo.

  25. @24 That's kind of pathetic. Ever heard of a wallet?

  26. @24
How is this possible? You're 18~22, not 80: shouldn't you get that checked out or something?

  27. @24
Attach it to something valuable that you won't lose.

    Like your phone or wallet.

  28. @24 How the fuck?

  29. Although I can sympathize with random homeless people making you mildly uncomfortable, I also think those who say "just go to a homeless shelter" lack some understanding of homeless shelters, as #19 said. I have never personally stayed in a shelter, but I know those who have, and they are often not safe places. Sometimes people staying there attack each other, and this happens often enough that some people who are homeless think they are safer on the streets. Furthermore, shelters have times you have to come in by to be able to stay for the night. If you are working a 9-5 job because you are trying to better your circumstances, you often cannot make those deadlines, and you no longer have shelters as an option, even if you are willing to take the safety risk.

  30. I don't think everyone above is saying that they dislike her presence and suggest a shelter. It seems there have been quite a number of incidences where students were confused by her confusing and often unpleasant actions. If she prefers being on campus then I don't understand why yelling or staying stuff to people is a good idea. Wouldn't it be better to just be neutral and stay under the radar... like the way she keeps up the appearance.

  31. @30

You're making the assumption here this person is rational.

Shelters may not be the best place for her, but MIT campus certainly isn't.

If people want her to have a better place to live, then they should work on improving the quality of shelters.

  32. dude i lost at least 10 id cards last year ($150 in replacement fees)... ive only lost one this year ($25 in replacement fees), believe me being a forgetful, responsibility lacking, student-loan ridden fuckup is not cute

also some people don't loose their id, they just don't always have it on them, or it's just easier to enter a code then dig through your bag to find your id

  33. so i've also been confused and frustrated by this woman - sometimes grabbing study snacks when my friends and i have a verde's binge on the 5th floor while studying. not cool, bro.

real talk: what sort of actionable steps can be taken to get her elsewhere? campus is open but not public. there's a difference.

  34. I have called the campus police to report before. They said they couldn't do anything since it was a few hours past.

So I guess you have to call and report right away when a suspicious person is seen on campus. Otherwise it doesn't mean anything..

  35. @33 She stole your food? I'm confused.
